Mouth Cancer Action Month is a charity campaign which aims to raise awareness of mouth cancer and make a difference by saving thousands of lives through early detection and prevention. Created and managed by the British Dental Health Foundation, the event seeks to highlight key issues pertaining to mouth cancer and tries to reduce the worrying statistic that shows around 2,000 people lose their lives to the disease every year in the UK – this figure is higher than the death toll caused by cervical and testicular cancer combined.
Mouth cancer can happen to anyone though a number of risk-factors have been linked heavily to the condition through detailed research; these risk factors include smoking (including passive smoking), drinking alcohol, poor diet and HPV (a virus spread by sexual contact with infected persons). Symptoms vary though recurring/long-lasting mouth ulcers, red/white patches and unusual swelling anywhere around the neck and head are common.
Put simply, the early detection of mouth cancer could save your life. For this reason, it is essential to maintain regular contact with a professional dental team in order that routine checks can be carried out. Mouth cancer checks are a standard part of our examination routine and are carried out both visually and manually to ensure no signs or symptoms of mouth cancer are present.
Throughout November the staff at Savernake Dental in Marlborough will be aiming to get more mouth cancers diagnosed at an early stage by increasing education of the risk factors and signs and symptoms.
Denplan is the main sponsor of Mouth Cancer Action Month and they are supporting the cause through their #BlueLipSelfie campaign. They are aiming to raise awareness of mouth cancer using a visible sign of support.
So the staff from our practice took part in the #BlueLipSelfie campaign hy some pictures of themselves with blue lips to help raise awareness of Mouth Cancer. Then they were posted on social media.
